Grant an autonomy level and set a ceiling

Evidence makes an action ready for its next level. Only a person grants it. This guide takes you through reading the map, granting a level and capping what can be granted.

On this page

Read the autonomy map#

Open the Authority room. Each row is an action that changes something, such as a refund. A row shows its level now, its agents, whether Guard is watching or stopping calls for its tool, and its next level with each condition met, missing, unknown, not enough evidence or waived. A level marked Ready for a person to grant has every condition met or waived. Review due appears from seven days before a grant expires. See Autonomy levels.

If the map says "No action that changes something was found", Geometer found no tool operation that changes anything. Authority is granted per tool action, such as a refund, so declare your agent's tools and check the project first.

Try a limit on past calls#

Before granting levels 3 to 5, see what a limit would have done. In the Live room, use Try a limit on past calls. See Watch with Guard.

Grant a level#

  1. In Guard, under What each tool may do, open the action's row and press Grant a level…. The form is titled Grant a level for and the action's name.
  2. Pick the Level. Levels above a ceiling are shown as above the ceiling and cannot be chosen.
  3. For levels that need one, type a Limit, in the amount field of the tool.
  4. Type Who grants it, for example "Payments lead". The name is stored as typed. This computer cannot check who you are.
  5. Pick Review by (it reverts then), a date after today. At that date the action returns to its previous level.
  6. Optionally add a note.
  7. Press Review what changes. A summary shows the action, the new level, what Guard will do, who grants it, the date, and which agents it covers. If Guard is not set up for the tool, it says the grant is recorded as granted but not enforced. If a condition is not met, it lists it and says you may still grant the level and the record will say so.
  8. Press Grant this level, or Change something to go back.

A grant for levels 2 to 5 switches Guard for that whole tool to stopping calls. The view says "written, not yet in force" until Guard is restarted. Each grant is also added to the Prove record.

Set a ceiling#

A ceiling caps what can be granted. Open the action's row and press Set a ceiling…. The form is titled Set a ceiling for and the action's name:

  1. Choose the Highest level allowed.
  2. Optionally type an amount in Above this amount.
  3. Type Set by and an optional Note.
  4. Press Record the ceiling.

A grant above the ceiling is refused. No evidence lifts a ceiling. Only a person changing it does, and that is recorded too. A ceiling set after a grant does not lower the grant. Guard lists it under For a person to look at.

Confirm or waive a condition#

  • If a condition needs a person's confirmation, press Record a confirmation…, type Your name and an optional Note. The name is recorded as you type it.
  • To waive a condition on a launch board, give your name and Why it can be waived. The waiver shows as waived, never as met, and keeps the state the evidence had.

When Geometer steps an action down#

If a confirmed breach happens after a grant, the action drops one level at once, and Guard says why under For a person to look at. A step-down never goes below level 2. See Step-downs. Only a new grant raises it again.

Review allowed calls at level 4#

At level 4, a sample of allowed calls waits under Checked afterwards with the reason it was chosen. Type Your name, then press Looks fine or Raise a concern. A concern is shown but changes no authority.

Launch boards#

To track a decision such as "Refunds agent for all customers", use Name a launch decision, choose the conditions to show and press Create the launch board. It lists each condition and its state. The decision is still yours.
